As a Naturopathic Doctor, I ask everyone to re-examine their definition of health. The first month of the year - is a perfect time to do this. What makes the difference is our intention and making small, manageable changes.
Set attainable goals!
Simply put, health is more than the absence of disease. Health is becoming well on all levels - mental, physical and emotional. When considering healthy food choices, it is equally important to nourish all levels of our being. Whether young or grown-up, we need the right fuel to keep our brains and bodies going.
Here are important nutritional boosts to keep your mind alert and body healthy this winter:
Although we don’t think of adrenals as top priority - the adrenals are the organ which helps us during times of stress by producing adrenaline we need when faced with change and challenges - even positive ones. Proper adrenal function helps the body adapt to change.
Adrenal Foods: The adrenals need to be replenished after an expending energy - nutritional ways to rebuild them include:
Vitamin B5 or pantothenic acid - whole grains, eggs, legumes
Vitamin C - citrus, broccoli, tomatoes, cherries, sour fruit
Zinc - garbanzo beans, pumpkin seeds, oysters, black eyed peas
Adrenals give us physical stamina and the fortitude to continue. When the adrenals are weak, fatigue, low blood pressure, increased physical pain, increased allergies and poor sleep are commonly seen.
Plan ahead when you shop for the week, plan for some “emergency” back up snacks like protein bars as well as.
I provide patients seeking nutritional counselling this whole foods shopping list to keep on track while they shop.
